Everyone hates the thought of losing a tooth. Especially children. But it’s completely normal for children to lose their baby teeth, so extracting a baby tooth that cannot be saved is not something to worry about. The best thing to do is to keep an eye on the empty space to make sure the adult tooth under the gums erupts normally. Needing to extract a permanent tooth, however, is a bigger deal because a new tooth won’t grow in to replace it. In this case, a dental implant may be installed that will look and feel like a natural tooth. While the goal of pediatric dentistry is to preserve primary teeth whenever possible, there are instances where tooth extraction, or removing the tooth, becomes necessary. This is often the case when a primary tooth is severely decayed, infected, or damaged beyond repair. Extracting a primary tooth can prevent the spread of infection and alleviate discomfort. When extracting a tooth, we focus on minimizing pain and anxiety. At LUXORA Pediatric Dentistry, we know the procedure can be intimidating, so we do our best to create a child-friendly environment. We use local anesthesia and offer sedation options to ensure that the procedure is as comfortable as possible. If we have to pull a tooth before it’s ready to come out, we’ll place a space maintainer to ensure your child’s mouth continues to develop correctly.
